Shemya Snapshots

This gallery contains snapshots of Shemya Island, Alaska. I worked here 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off from December 2004 to May 2007. Shemya is a small two mile by four mile island located at the end of the Aleutian chain in Alaska. It is about 1500 air miles from Anchorage and is closer to Russia (about 200 miles) and Japan (about 1200 miles).

This is the plane (G-3) we flew in to get back and forth between Anchorage and Shemya Island. It was about a 3 hour flight, one way, as long as you were able to land. If you couldn't land you flew back to Anchorage and tried again the next day.

My room on Shemya. We had our own rooms which were ours even when we were off island so we were able to keep all of our stuff there. There was one bathroon for every two rooms which was not too bad.
